Crystal Bjornson, Chair

Crystal  is a student with the University of Regina, who spends her days coordinating schedules for healthcare professionals. Crystal received a Business Certificate from SIAST (now Saskatchewan Polytechnic) in 2009 and has primarily worked in the Health and Safety field. Crystal is actively pursuing a degree in Social Work from the University of Regina, and came into contact with SEARCH through one of her courses. When not working, going to school, or volunteering, Crystal spends her time with family, friends, and especially her dog. Crystal enjoys volunteering with SEARCH immensely and looks forward to her year as the Chair.

Jessica Dunster, Co-Chair

Jessica recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Regina/Sask Polytech. Jessica loves working with children, and also volunteers on the pediatric and neonatal units at the General Hospital. She sponsors a child in Tanzania, Africa through World Vision and looks forward to sponsoring many more children over the years. She has two pugs, Gus & Oliver, and a boston terrier, Winston, and enjoys spending time with friends/family, being outdoors, cooking, cleaning/organizing, working out and coffee!!! Jessica started volunteering with SEARCH in September 2014 as part of her community placement for nursing and stayed on as a volunteer because she loved working with the families that come to SEARCH and wanted to be more involved. Jessica was the Programming Chair at SEARCH from 2015-2017 and is excited to be taking on a new role for 2017-2018. Jessica truly loves being part of the SEARCH family and is very passionate about community health.

Jessica Bec, Secretary

Jessica Bec is a 4th year Middle Years Education student, attending the University of Regina. She began volunteering at SEARCH in February 2016. The people she has met, experiences she has had, and all of the things she has learned at SEARCH will forever influence her life; especially when teaching students who come from all different cultures, races, socio-economic backgrounds, or any walks of life. Because of SEARCH she knows that everyone has something to offer and you can find knowledge in the most unlikely of places. She is very excited to be even more involved in SEARCH, acting as the SEARCH Board Secretary. This year will be a great year full of many new adventures, and  she can’t wait!

Cameron Symon, Policy Chairperson

Cameron is in his second year at the University of Regina pursuing a degree in Health Studies. Prior to beginning university, he worked as an Advanced Care Paramedic in a northern First Nations community. Cameron began volunteering with SEARCH in 2016. He is excited to be joining the Board of Directors and becoming more involved in the operation of SEARCH. Cameron also volunteers with the Big Brothers of Regina program. His other interests include: hiking, camping, biking and spending time with his miniature dachshund Zeus.

Kelsey Laventure, Programming Committee Chairperson

Kelsey is currently in her fourth year at the University of Regina, studying psychology and anthropology. Some of her hobbies include travelling, music, and doing sudoku puzzles. She joined SEARCH because she believes in the importance of building a stronger and healthier community for everyone. This is Kelsey’s first year on the SEARCH Board of Directors.

Sarah Wiseman – Faculty Liaison & Volunteer Retention Chairperson

Sarah is currently in her second year of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan, and her third year of Health Studies at the University of Regina. She started volunteering with SEARCH in January of 2016 after hearing about it through a class, and decided to continue volunteering because she is passionate about helping build a healthier community. She has learned a lot through the experiences she has had, as well as the people she has met at SEARCH. This is Sarah’s first year on the SEARCH Board of Directors, and she is very excited to have the opportunity to become more involved.

Faculty Liaison & Volunteer Retention Committee:

Saria Jabbar – Saria is a fourth year Health Studies major with minors in Kinesiology and Psychology. She plans on keeping her options open by applying to various medical schools and Masters programs after graduation. Saria enjoys volunteering at SEARCH because it helps her connect with community members on a more personal level. As well, she finds that SEARCH is a great clinical setting where she is able to observe and put into practice many of the concepts discussed in her classes. In her spare time, Saria enjoys reading, working out, travelling, watching Netflix,  and relaxing with her family.

Shavan Bagiana, Grants & Fundraising Chairperson

Shavan just finished her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biochemistry from University of Regina. Currently, she is working at Pasqua hospital as Diet Clerk. Her future goals are to apply for medical school. Shavan came into contact with SEARCH through her URG advisor, and has been volunteering at SEARCH since 2014. Besides working and volunteering, Shavan enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and dancing at Indian events. Shavan has really enjoyed her previous years as a volunteer at SEARCH, and also looks forward to her year as a board member.

Nikki Tyminski , Clinical Liaison Chairperson

Nikki recently started her fourth year of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.  Prior to entering into medical school, Nikki did an undergraduate degree in nutrition at the University of Alberta and worked as a Pediatric Clinical Dietitian for 3 years in Calgary.  Outside of school, Nikki can be found playing music with friends, cooking, hanging out with family, riding her bike, and travelling when she gets a chance – usually to the mountains to go hiking!

Nikki found out about SEARCH through the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine’s Making the Links program.  She began her volunteering experience in July of 2015 and has loved every moment of it.  Through her experience at SEARCH, she has gained invaluable experience learning about the social determinants of health, the community as a whole, and the importance of offering interdisciplinary services/ resources.  She is very excited to be a member of the Board of Directors this year as the Clinical Liaison Chairperson.

Rabia Rafiq, Community Liaison & Public Relations Chair

Rabia is currently in her third year at the University of Regina. She was born in Pakistan and immigrated to Canada at the age of four. However, her ties to her country taught her the importance of helping woman in need after seeing countless underprivileged woman in Pakistan. Rabia feels blessed to be living in a place like Canada where she can pursue her dreams of becoming a gynaecologist and opening her own fertility clinic. She also volunteers as a student coach for volleyball with young girls to help promote the importance of staying physically active. Rabia likes to spend time with her family and friends and enjoys hosting dinners. Her favourite television show is Grey’s Anatomy.

Rabia heard about SEARCH from a volunteer fair in Fall 2014 and has been volunteering with them since then. She was interested in the SEARCH mission and values which is why she started volunteering with the organization. Rabia really enjoys volunteering through SEARCH because she was able to gain invaluable information on not only primary health care but also on the importance of the social determinants of health. She wanted to take on a bigger role within the organization and decided to join the board of directors in May 2016.

Angela Tremka – Angela completed her bachelor of Kinesiology with a double major in Human Kinetics and Health Promotion in 2015 along with a certificate in Public Relations. As soon as the certificate in Nonprofit Sector Leadership and Innovation was offered, she jumped at the learning opportunity. Now that Angela is a student again, she is happy to get back into volunteering with SEARCH and wanted to help out at a greater capacity. Angela is excited to serve on the Community Liaison and Public Relations committee and hopes to continue to grow the reach and connections of SEARCH. Through her experience volunteering at SEARCH, Angela has gained invaluable first-hand experience on the importance of the social determinants of health and the impact that SEARCH has in strengthening the community. In Angela’s spare time, she enjoys reading, doodling, spending time with her two cats, bike rides, and birding. Angela is looking forward to her role on this committee.
